Transportation In Japan

While we were watching the movie about Bejing it talked about how common it was for people to travel by bicycle in China and in large cities. So I decided to do some research about he forms of travel in Japan to see if there was a difference. I came across this home page which features several different forms of transportation.

However I was interested in reading more about The Tokaido Shinkansen which connects Tokyo and three other major cities in Japan. It is the world’s first high speed train and was inaugurated in 1964. Since its inauguration it has grown in size and now connects more than just the three original cities through multiple routes.

Mass transportation is something I don't see a lot of in Central Minnesota just because the area is still pretty rural and the cities are not connected as a Metropolitan area. However, I think Mass transportation is something that more people should advocate to see, even in our small area. I don't know the progress of this project off hand, but I wonder how the light rail system idea is coming along that would connect St. Cloud to the Twin Cities. What a great mass transportation idea. I know a lot of people who drive to Minneapolis to see concerts, Twins and Vikings games, or a hockey game at the Xcel Center or to visit the Mall of America. If someone is visiting Minneapolis to see such attractions as those, a mass transportation system would be handy. Imagine the money that could be saved on gas if people could take advantage of something like this. I think the Tokaido Shinkansen is a great idea and more American rural cities should push for something to connect us. Maybe not neccessarily a high speed train, but light rail would be beneficial.
