Ethnic Tension
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/09/17/pope.islam/index.htmlIn our textbook "Globalization and Diversity" (page 18) it states; "that a defining trait of cultural groups is their relgion and some would argue that much present-day tension is religious-based." This was definitely the case when Pope Benedict XVI made a negative remark last week about Muslims saying that they spread their religion by violence. The Pope said he was deeply sorry and hoped his entire speech would show respect for the Muslim faith instead of Muslims attacking a few passages. Those at the highest level in the Catholic church wouldn't fully apologize.
I feel that the Pope's comments taken from a medieval text was insensitive and disrespectful. He was quoted as saying that the comments didn't express his personal thoughts. The Pope is seen as a very powerful Christian leader and many Christians and non-Christians are watching and listening to his every move. Therefore he and others must watch what is being said. The world is currently in lots of turmoil the way it is. If the Pope thought this would bring about a positive and productive dialogue about Islam and Catholics then boy is he mistaken. Several churches have been attacked (the worst the Vatican has seen), an Italian nun was killed, and many demonstrations are happening including a group of Muslims handing out CD's as I left my Christian church after worship today.
As also stated in my textbook, "34% of the world's population are Christians and 20% of the world's poulation is Islam." These cultures as well as others have religious traditions which make up their cultural and ethnic identity. With globalization and immigration our world is ever changing, and we need to change with it. If we want terrorism at home and abroad to cease, especially our leaders and those with the most power, must fully show respect to all religions so we can avoid unnecessary violence and continued terrorism.
