There was another posting about women’s rights in Saudi Arabia and I became interested to see if I could find some more information. I came across women’s rights in several different countries and read how they compared and how they differed.
When I was little we used to have a family from the Middle East that lived near us. The mother of the family always wore the clothes that covered her, and at this time I was little and wasn't so knowledgable about the customs of different peoples. In World Lit we discussed whether it was right for women to be covered with this clothing and debated it. When you think about it though, who is right? This practice is something that some here may see as wrong, but what are their thoughts in the Middle East? Clearly we see this as wrong because we know that covering yourself is taking away yourself from the world, but in the Middle East their perception of this practice could be seen differently. Perhaps they see it as a freedom and we are the ones who are having the freedom taken from us. We feel so justified that we are right, but at the same time their thinking may be so justified in believing they're right, in which case who's right? We know that we are right because we see it as taking away freedom from our belief system, but to somebody in the Middle East, they could be the ones that are right in their mind. Interesting to think about.
