700 Mile Border Fence

On Thursday Sept. 14th, the House voted to put up a new 700 miles of double-layered fencing in parts of CA, AZ, NM, and TX as part of a Republican attempt to shut down illegal immigration. Rep. Peter King stated, "the separate fence bill was needed to show Americans 'we can take meaningful action to secure the border.'" However on the flip side is that "Democrats accused Republicans of playing upon voters' fear to score political points."

With globalization, as stated in the textbook on page 5, comes many criminal elements. Between Mexico and the U.S. there is fear of drug smuggling, terrorism, gangs, and other illegal activity. Many citizens of our country are upset because illegal immigrants are taking jobs away from legal citizens. Others say that illegal immigrants are filling jobs that many Americans don't want or won't do. The House's solution to handle part of the problem is a 700 mile border fence between Mexico and the U.S.

Although I feel that we need to take control of the illegal immigrant situation, I'm not sure a 700 mile fence will solve the problem. Only 75 miles out of a 2,000 mile border is now fenced. Republicans estimate it will cost about 2 billion, yet the Democrats say it will cost 7 billion. Since we're spending so much money on the war overseas, where will this money come from? Education? Raise taxes? Higher gas prices? I find Rep. Tom Tancredo's comment from Colorado rather ridculous when he stated, "What would be the best Christmas present to the American people is pictures of concrete being poured." Personally, I won't be spending my vacation time site seeing this "beautiful" landmark. And with that another issue arises. What about a fenced border needing to be built between the U.S. and Canada?

The fence may or may not fix the problem. This can only be known for certain if it is put into action. But surely there are better paths that should be considered first. People always get upset over this issue, saying that illegal imigrants from Mexico are taking jobs from hard working
Americans, or smuggling drugs, or bringing other kinds of negativities across the border. What I think we should do rather than brashly spending money keeping immigrants out of the United States, is look to the government of Mexico. People leave Mexico because of unsavory conditions there. If the United States and Mexico cooperated to make conditions better in Mexico, maybe there would not be such high numbers of illegals coming to U.S. soil. Yes, a physical barrier between our two contries could in theory be effective. But it is a quick, temporary fix. Perhaps this money would be more effective if it were put to use bettering conditions in Mexico.
