Baboon Attacks

The South African suburbs of Cape Town have recently been seeing an increasing number of human/baboon conflicts. The baboons enter the towns and go into homes where they destroy items, or travel the streets where interactions with humans can become dangerous. Some of the residents have reacted by killing the baboons with guns and running them over on the streets. Others have formed a protection group in an effort to prevent the killings of the baboons. This situation is an excellent example of the costs of human expansion. As the city of Cape Town increases and more suburbs are added and existing ones expand the encroachment of humans onto previous baboon territory will worsen. Resulting in more and more conflicts between the species. In the past it is typically the humans who win and the animals that suffer at our expense. I doubt this situation will be any different. It is terrible to think of the baboons being run out of there native land and killed but this is just another expense of the increasing human population.
