Schools are the City Core

City Core

Since we were last talking about how cities grow, i thought this article might be interesting. It's all about how schools might have to be closed because of how and where the city grows. St. Cloud Tech is a school that needs to be addressed in the next 10 years. It's strange because it's such a big school. I hear about Tech almost everyday. St. Cloud wants to rebiuld schools to have a (for the lack of a better word) better core. They want the city core to be stronger.
The article talks about the success of schools in bad areas. The success of some schools where 64% of the students recieved free or reduced lunches.
It's an interesting article that talked about many things that we don't understand because of where we live. Our town isn't as large at St. Cloud...yet.

And, our Dance Team had some pictures.

Education and issues concerning it in the area have always been something close to my heart. I personally feel that the St. Cloud school district needs to develop a plan to address their enrollment issues. It's almost a compliment to us in Sartell in a way that we are growing and their district is losing kids each year because that must say that we are putting out a high level of education. Coming from Sartell I feel like I couldn't make an influence in the closing of Tech High School. I think this should be a decision that's within the St. Cloud district and should be a community decision. I think there was a lot of negativity towards closing Tech from people who currently attend it, but just think how helpful a new school would be to St. Cloud. From what it sounds like it seems that many of the schools in the St. Cloud school district are aging quite a bit. When a school has been around for quite some time a lot of people get attached to it, but when it comes in the way of moving into the future for the better, then we have problems. Imagine how much more students' education in St. Cloud would benefit if they were in a building that wasn't almost 100 years old. Just a few years ago we saw this same scenario unfold in Sartell. Sartell Elementary School, built in 1923, was closed down to students as we saw Pine Meadow Elementary being built. Certainly it was full of memories, but as a district we realized that a new building for learning would far outway history and we made the smart decision to build Pine Meadow. Same with St. Stephen Elementary. Certainly if the resources are available, the St. Cloud School district should look into this option.
