Globalizing Communication Saves Lives

A main focus of study in this class is the Globalization of the world, or the connectedness through converging economical or cultural differences. This story that was posted on http://www.wired.com shows how globalizing communication saved a girls life.

In Lugoff, South Caroline a 14-year-old girl, Elizabeth Shoaf, was held hostage by a kidnapper for as long as 10 days in a “booby-trapped bunker”. Only was she rescued after she was able to send a text message from her kidnapper’s cell phone, to her mother.

After receiving this text message, authorities were able to find Shoaf a mile from home in what is described as a 15-foot deep hole covered with plywood. This bunker had a toilet, toilet paper, a stove and shelves made of twigs, stick and canvas.

The text message that led authorities to the girl’s location was made from the suspect’s cell phone, traced by satellites to a general location, then by local towers to pin point the exact location. All three of those GPS locating systems were not available in the years prior.

This is a great example on how globalization has helped connect more people around the world to not only by offering the convenience of talking on a phone sometimes hundreds of miles from your home but also to save ones life only a mile from home in a 15 foot hole.
