Europe Fun Facts

I decided that we needed some new things to post on, but I could not seem to find an intersting topic from the notes that was not already talked about. Since we are studying Europe in College Geo I decided to find several different sites that just have fun or interesting information about Europe and the surrounding region. I learned that there are three different Euros that all look different. One of the other many funny things I found out on the sites is that during the 1500's in Europe, showers were not taken regularily. One shower was always taken in May, and so everybody wanted to get married in June so they would still smell good. If the plan didn't work they carried flowers to dround out the smell. This is where carrying flowers on your wedding day came about. Crazy! If you are interested in learning any other funny information I would encourage you to go to the posted sites. The European Union

I did my senior to sophomore paper on the European Union. I chose that topic because I didn't really understand what the European Union was. When I looked up its website, I found out a lot more than I was expecting. The EU does a lot more than just "keep the peace" in its member states. This site has a lot of information about what the EU is and even some fun facts about Europe itself. Check it out if you are interested.

Northern Ireland

In the notes today, there was a part about a conflict in Northern Ireland that has a religious component. I found a CNN special about this and thought it was interesting.
I don't hear about Ireland very often and even less about conflict with/within. My thoughts have changed after reading the first paragraph of this article.
Over the time period of 33 years, 3,636 people have been killed and 36,000 injured.
The tension is between the Catholics and protestants (which is the majority)

Europe Article
I read this article that was talking about how crude oil prices are at their all time highs today in New York and Europe. Europe is trying to find solutions to their huge problem of gas prices and one of their options is to switch gas burning power plants to coal. This may seem like a good idea to many, but today in class we had a discussion about how polluted Europe is. If they would put coal in the plants it would increase pollution a great deal.

Keeping the Oil Flow

I found this article about OPEC keeping the pumping of oil at record levels so, prices won't go much higher. It says in the article that the demand for oil is getting greater and is likely to still continue. OPEC has an output of more than 28 million barrels of oil a day, and trying to keep up with that, gets tough.

The Diaper Dumper

I stumbled across this article not to long ago, one that had an interesting title and seemed close to home. Apparently somebody has been dumping used adult diapers along a road in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, and they have dumped a load of diapers again. Police have not been able to capture the criminals, but they are hoping a witness can help identify the criminal(s) because the incident is happening in a rural area. The reason I put this in the College Geo blog is because I think this is a good example of culture. We often examine other cultures and point out the things that are different to us or that are similar, but how often do we really examine our own culture and decide what is "acceptable" and not "acceptable". Also, how do those of other cultures perceive events in our culture? Obviously, this diaper dumping example is something that we as a culture would perceive as wrong, but funny. In our culture, we understand and see some humor in a person dumping 15 used adult diapers and running after doing so to not be found. However, somebody of a different culture may not click into this incident the same way we do. Perhaps in their culture this might be part of something they see in their everday life because of the financial status of the people, overcrowding, or the small amount of waste control within the country. Many different factors could play a role in a situation like this. I think it is interesting to see how different cultures perceive different ideas. Here, 15 used adult diapers being continuously dumped in an area in a "dump and run" sounds funny when you think about it, but when you truly stop to consider the different customs, political backgrounds, beliefs, economic situations, pollution, and overcrowding issues that surround other cultures, one would wonder if someone would see the same amount of humor that we do in this kind of situation or others. And, what issues they see as funny in their culture, but we don't see.

Security Cameras Mean More Protection

I came across this article about how the NYPD are going to be installing security cameras throughout the city of Brooklyn to help fight crime and terrorism. With the times that we live in today where we are at a fight with terrorism and increased levels of crime, I think security cameras are a piece of technology that have really proved helpful in aiding police and also others such as home users and retailers. As terrorism and crime continue through the future and possibly grow, I think developers of these cameras will continue to make items more detailed for users. When you think about security cameras they have really been a global tool for helping to reduce crime and terrorism. Cameras easily can capture video or still images and the data is easily uploadable to the internet or can be broadcast through media outlets to help catch criminals and terrorists. I think security cameras are going to be a tool that law enforcement and retailers are going to continue to use to help fight a global issue of terrorism and crime.

Iran Training 40,000 Suicide Bombers

When watching KARE 11 News this evening, a short bit was mentioned that Iran is currently training 40,000 suicide bombers to be at the ready to attack in the United States or Britain, should the United States choose to go after Iran regarding issues surrounding wrong use of nuclear energy. I think this is very scary because Iran is an issue that is large on the United States political agenda, and this kind of information is something that one may be concerned about. The United States is still deciding on how to tackle the issue of Iran and information such as this would cause uneasiness in making decisions. This issue is a global issue because it's effects stretch beyond the United States and Britain. If the United States were to go into Iran I think we would see a greater global support because the issue of Iran is one that is clear and would be recognized by more countries.
